How to toilet train your dog
Toilet training your dog doesn’t have to be stressful. With a simple routine and consistency, most dogs learn quickly.
Stick to a Routine
Take your dog outside regularly, especially:
-
First thing in the morning
-
After meals
-
After naps and playtime
-
Before bed
Using the same times each day helps them understand when to go.
Use the Same Spot
Always take your dog to the same toilet area outside. Familiar smells help them learn where they’re meant to go.
Reward Straight Away
As soon as your dog goes outside, praise them or give a small treat. Immediate rewards help reinforce good behaviour.
Watch for Signs
Sniffing, circling, whining, or heading to the door usually means they need the toilet. Take them outside straight away to avoid accidents.
Deal With Accidents Calmly
Accidents are normal. Don’t punish your dog — calmly clean the area and stick to the routine. Use a pet-safe cleaner to remove odours.
Be Patient
Every dog learns at their own pace. Stay consistent and positive, and toilet training will soon become second nature.
